Operational Platform

A digital platform designed to ensure the traceability and security of chick vaccination, supporting hatcheries in managing their processes and quality compliance.

Client / Industry

Agri-food industry — Poultry Business Unit, Chêne Vert Conseil, in partnership with MSD Animal Health

Target

Hatcheries using MSD vaccines

Contexte

In hatchery operations, chick vaccination is a critical step: performed only once, it ensures protection throughout the animal’s life.

With the increasing complexity of vaccination protocols and new regulatory requirements, hatcheries face growing challenges in managing their operations. Errors in vaccination (dosage, mixing, procedures) can lead to significant health and financial consequences.

There is therefore a strong need for a tool that can secure processes, track operations, and ensure compliance.

Objectives

Design a Operational Platform to:

  • Automate data flows related to vaccines (ordering, veterinary validation, delivery)
  • Manage vaccine stocks and equipment (e.g. liquid nitrogen)
  • Record vaccination operations in real time
  • Secure protocols through alerts and quality controls
  • Implement validation workflows (go / no-go logic)
  • Generate compliance certificates (“properly vaccinated chicks”)
  • Track quality audits and deliveries
  • Centralize documentation
  • Integrate with existing hatchery systems
  • Provide a scalable solution adaptable to future needs

Process

A collaborative and iterative approach grounded in real user workflows and field understanding.

  • Facilitated workshops with a pilot hatchery team and veterinarians
  • Analyzed existing practices (including Excel-based workflows) to understand real operations
  • Identified complex business needs and constraints
  • Designed a multi-role platform (veterinarians, administrators, hatchery operators)
  • Created 245 wireframe screens, covering all use cases
  • Developed interactive UI prototypes to test flows, validate design decisions, and refine the user experience before development
  • Collaborated with technical teams to ensure feasibility and alignment with business constraints
  • Conducted post-development follow-up and field validation during implementation in a pilot hatchery

Over time, what started as a vaccination journey evolved into a much broader ecosystem, integrating equipment management, stock management, and quality processes.

Key Features

  • Weekly vaccination planning
  • Equipment management
  • Stock management
  • End-to-end vaccination workflow (preparation, execution, validation)
  • Centralized documentation
  • Dashboards (daily and monthly reports)
  • Alerts and quality controls
  • Operations history tracking
  • Advanced settings (protocol management and vaccine incompatibilities defined by veterinarians)

Product Challenges

  • Managing high business and operational complexity
  • Ensuring data reliability and traceability
  • Designing an intuitive interface for non-digital users
  • Guaranteeing compliance and process security

Outcome

  • Successful implementation in a pilot hatchery
  • Strong adoption by operational teams, simplifying vaccination management processes
  • Progressive rollout across additional hatcheries in France
  • Improved traceability, data reliability, and process compliance
